About

Shinnecock Photo Project attempts to reinforce our connection to the land and aims to present ourselves in a web-based portraiture platform. This project is led by enrolled Shinnecock Indian Nation tribal member photographer Jeremy Dennis.

The Shinnecock Portrait Project is made possible with Special thanks to MDOC Storyteller’s Institute hosted at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, in June 2018.

Harry William (Chief War Hawk) and Albert Ashman (Sitting Bull) colorized The caption reads: "This is an extremely rare photo of two men representing past and present generations at the Shinnecock Reservation in 1966. Ethnologically the photo has a unique value because it proves the fact that there are among the current generation of the Long Island some excellent types of American Indians in spite of the ever increasing inter-marriage with the Negro Race.
The young man on the left is Harry Williams (Chief War Hawk) one of the current trustees of the reservation and who is in charge of the Indian Concessions at the annual Shinnecock Pow Wow. Pictured next to him is Albert Ashaman (Sitting Bull) a Shinnecock-Montauk about whom the story is related in photo 22."

Flag Raising At The Old Shinnecock School During The Winter Of Bygone Days The caption reads:
"It appears to have been a bleak and wintry day when these Shinnecocks were trying to wright a flagpole that the wintry wind had blown over some years ago. The man with the mustache on the right and black shock of hair is Charles Bunn who is shown in photo 25.
I would judge that this photo was taken somewhere around 1908. Pictured on the left is a shed that might have been a shelter for the horse and buggy that belonged to the teacher.
Many of the members of the tribe recall the days that they and their grandparents learned the three R's in this quaint little schoolhouse that burnt down in the year of 1967."
