The caption reads: "Those who visit the Shinnecock reservation today will find that the young man on the left, with the white sweater, is now one of the three tribal trustees who are elected by the tribe, in the Southampton Town Hall with Town Officials officiating in a ceremony held the first Tuesday in April; Trustees are elected for a one year term.
This is Harry Williams (Chief War Hawk), who is also in charge of the concessions at the annual Pow Wow held by the Shinnecocks every Labor Day Weekend.
I know Harry Williams well and sparked his interest in Indian traditions when I first visited the reservation. He was the first Shinnecock to show me around the reservation. He comes from a strong Indian line from both sides of his family and is a full-blood type. He is one of 52 Indians who served in World War II. He is married to the former Mary Davis who is also a Shinnecock. He is a hard worker and is constantly trying to better his reservation. Like most hard workers he is not fully appreciated for his efforts."

He was well versed in the customs of his people and his memories of early life among the Shinnecock life were of much value to ethnologists and historians. His home was always being visited by people who wanted to photograph him. His family was always very proud of the fact that he was said to resemble George Washington by many. He was a whaler and also remembered when the Shinnecocks used to live in wigwams. According to Wickham, the Shinnecocks stopped living in wigwams after the year 1856.
He was hired by many museums to make models of the Shinnecock wigwam and he was also experienced as a Scrub maker.
His scrubs as well as wigwam models are now collector's items. He was also the last of the Shinnecock Indians who spoke the tribal language. Wickham Cuffee died in the year of 1915 and was much missed by his people. He is still a favorite topic of conversation among the Shinnecocks and many of the Southampton residents."

The (racist) caption reads: "The name Lee became a family one at Shinnecock when James Lee, a southern Negro married Roxanna Bunn, a Shinnecock Indian. The Lee family has been one of the most well known among the tribe. The Lees were a fine looking people who inherited the physical traits of the Shinnecock Indians.
Among the famous Shinnecock whalers of yesteryear were Milton Lee, Robert Lee, Garrison Lee and Ferdinand Lee who was skipper of "The Bark Amethyst" which became lost in the Arctic seas. Other well known members of this family were Linfield, Lubin, Harriet, Mary Ester, Della, Ferdinand, Belmont, and Robert. This family is still represented among today's Shinnecocks.

The caption reads: "This photo of Janet Barnes was taken in 1943, at the annual June meeting of the Shinnecocks, which was held at the church, the first Sunday in June. Members of the Tribe from far and near attended. In former days members used to go from house to house to partake of delicious foods after the church services.
It is interesting here to compare the June meeting of the Shinnecocks with that of the August meeting of the Narragansetts of Rhode Island. The Narragansett meeting is held on the second Saturday and Sunday in August at the Little Stone Indian Church deep in Charlestown Woods. Indian dress is worn by many, with tribal ceremonies taking place. By contrast, no Indian apparel is worn at the Shinnecocks, and no Indian Rituals are observed at this meeting.
Janet Barnes is now a grown young lady and assists with serving food at the Annual Shinnecock Pow Wow held on Labor Day weekend."
